This is not the traditional Kichadi..The traditional kichadi is a semi liquid food, which is common in North India. I like the combination of Rice and Moong Dal. So like to prepare this way with less liquid…that means it will look somewhat like rice itself..
You need
1. Basmati rice – 1 cup
2. Yellow Moong dal – 1/4 cup
3. Ghee – 2 tbsp
4. Mstard seeds 1/4 tsp
5. Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp
6. Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp
7. Green chillies – 1 Chopped
8. Onion medium sized – 1 chopped
9. ginger-garlic grated- 1/2 tsp
10. tomato – 1 small chopped
11. turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
12. chilli powder – 1 tsp
13. garam masala – 1/4 tsp
14. water – 2 1/2 cups
15. salt to taste
16. coriander leaves – 1/4 tbsp chopped
You have to
1. Soak the moong dal and rice for 10 minutes.
2. Heat the ghee in pressure cooker pan
3. Add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds and allow to splutter.
4. Add the asofoetida, green chillies and onions and saute till onions turn translucent.
5. Add the ginger-garlic paste and saute for 2 minutes.
6. Add the tomatoes and all the masala, saute till the tomatoes are very soft.
7. When ghee starts leaving sides, add the soaked rice, moong dal, water , salt and coriander leaves and stir it well.
8. Cover and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
9. Remove from the flame and allow the pressure to go completely
10. You could serve hot with pickle or raitha and garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves
Note:- You could even garnish it with cashew nuts roasted in ghee.
