Vermicelli / Semiya upma

October 4, 2011 By Manjooo M Leave a Comment

It is something very easy to prepare. Sometimes i prepare it for breakfast or lunch or tea time snack.

1. Vermicelli – 1 cup
2. Red onions chopped – 1/2 cup
3. Green chilli – 1 or 2 slit
4. Gratted coconut – 1/4 cup
5. gratted ginger – 1 tsp
6. salt to taste
7. Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
8. curry leaves – 5 to 6 leaves.
9. Refined oil – 2 tsp + 2 drops

You have to,
1. Boil 4 cups of water, salt to taste and 2 drops of oil in a sauce pan
2. Add the vermicelli.
3. Check the cooking instruction in the packet. Normally in 3 minutes it will be cooked.
4. Remove from fire and strain.
5. Run some cold water. strain and keep aside.
6. In a pan, heat remaining oil and add mustard seeds, curry leaves.
7. Allow the mustard seeds to pop up.
8. Add chopped onion, ginger , salt and green chillies.
9. Saute till the onions turn light pink.
10. Add the cooked vermicelli. Fold in the vermicelli till the onions and vermicelli is evenly mixed
11. Add gratted coconut and mix.
12. Serve hot.

Note: You can add 1/4 cup of vegetables (carrots, beans) at step 8 and saute till onions turns translucent.
It is tasty 🙂
